UK CAS Letter: What You Need To Know As An International Student

What is a CAS Letter

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies Letter, commonly known as CAS Letter, is an essential document in your Tier 4 visa (student) application. The CAS letter is issued by the school institution where you have been accepted to study.

The CAS letter contains a unique number CAS number that is required in your visa application process.  With the CAS number, the consular officer can confirm that you have been offered an unconditional admission by the institution that issued the CAS Letter and their willingness to sponsor your visa.

Who needs a CAS letter?

All international students that need to be in the UK to complete their education in their university need a CAS Letter to apply for a visa, and it allows the consular to verify that the university you will be studying at is a licensed student sponsor.

The CAS Letter also helps the consular officer confirm most of your details like course dates, financial information, accommodation, English test scores, etc. This helps save time as student travels are time-sensitive.

How to obtain a CAS Letter

To be eligible for a CAS Letter, you must have applied for admission from the university of your choice and gotten a conditional offer letter containing the following steps and documents you need to provide for them to issue a CAS Letter. More in the next section.

CAS Letter Requirements

To get a CAS Letter from the institution, most universities will send you a conditional offer letter that contains the requirements you need to fulfill to get your CAS Letter; these might include but are not limited to:

  • Registration or Acceptance fee
  • Minimum tuition fee deposit
  • International passport data page
  • Tuberculosis certificate
  • Copies of previous UK visas, including expired ones
  • Proof of study in the UK
  • Financial documents containing sufficient funds for your tuition fees and living expenses in the UK are signed by official financial institutions, such as banks.
  • Official translated copies of documents that are not in English.

Some universities might also require original educational documents such as transcripts to be sent directly from your school.

After submitting the requested documents, you should get your CAS Letter within 2-3 business days after the school has verified your documents.

How long is a CAS letter valid for

Suppose the visa application was refused and you want to reapply. In that case, you need to contact the school or, more specifically, the admission officer for your region about the next steps you need to take to get another CAS Letter. A student can only use a CAS Letter once, and you must submit the visa application within six months after the issue date.

That said, most of the details will be the same, and you won’t be required to submit the requirements again, except for time-sensitive documents, for example, bank statements.

Who can issue a CAS letter

International students must be in the UK for studies and sponsored by their school or studies provider. The only requirement is that the school must be a licensed student sponsor. You can check if your school is a licensed sponsor here

Why was my CAS application rejected?

There are lots of reasons why a CAS Letter application might be rejected, but typical cases are when the applicant:

  • Submitted false documents
  • Has an immigration problem, such as travel bans or visa refusal
  • They did not disclose their UK study history
  • Wants to study at a lower level than their previous study level
  • Did not complete their prior course of study after being granted a Tier 4 visa

That said, most schools won’t outrightly refuse your CAS Letter application and would request an explanation of any issue you haven’t disclosed.

Note: Some schools won’t refund your tuition deposit if they discover that any documents you submitted are fake.
