What Is A UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

What is a BRP?

A biometric residence permit commonly known as BRP is a card that contains a unique number used to verify your right to study, identity and most importantly, your right to public services and benefits. The BRP card is an essential document that you must have because it is the actual visa that allows you to stay in the UK for more than six months.

BRP Eligibility Requirements

The BRP card is proof that you have been allowed to stay in the UK for longer than six months. The primary BRP requirements are legitimate reasons to stay in the UK for an extended period. As an international traveller, you will get a BRP card if you apply to the UK for the following reasons:

  • Study for more than six months
  • Settling in the UK
  • Extended visa for more than six months
  • Visa transfer to another passport

Depending on your circumstance and other reasons not highlighted here, you can get a BRP.

Options for BRP Collection

As an international student, you will be granted a 90 days entry visa once your visa is approved, and you must collect your BRP within ten days of entry into the UK except in case of quarantine or sickness. Not collecting your BRP within the specified period might result in a civil penalty such as fines and in rare cases, the UK Home Office might cancel your visa.

You can collect your BRP from the nearest post office to your school or from the school if there’s an Alternative Collection Location (ACL) code on your CAS letter. You need to input the postal code or the ACL code upon submission of your application.

Information on the BRP card

Upon collection of your BRP card, you need to confirm the following details:

  • Your digital image
  • Your full name
  • Expiry date
  • Type of permit (this should tally with your purpose of stay)
  • Your signature
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth

If you notice any error on the card, you must report it within ten days. Otherwise, you may have to pay.

How Long is a BRP Card Valid For

The validity of your BRP card depends on your purpose of staying in the UK. For international students, your BRP will be valid for four months after the duration of your course of study.

If your course end date is July 2022, your BRP expiry date will be November 2022; this gives you enough time to decide your next move after graduation to get a job or apply for a visa extension.

Nominating a third party for collection

In cases where you can’t collect your BRP personally due to sickness or a disability, you can nominate a third party to collect the BRP card on your behalf. The nominee must take your passport to the collection location as proof that you are in the UK.

The nominee must also have one of the following documents:
A BRP card
A British passport
An EU national identity card

You can get a third party to nominate someone to collect your BRP card on your behalf. For example, a lawyer or your university; should get the nomination decision within five days, which will let you know whether the person is eligible to collect the BRP card on your behalf.

If the nomination application is rejected, you can nominate another person or collect it yourself; you don’t need to cancel the nomination.

How to Replace a Lost BRP Card

In a case of loss or theft of your BRP card, you must report it within three months, and you can only get a replacement in the UK. The UK Home Office should reply to you in a day.

If you find your BRP card after reporting the loss, you still need to get a new one because the one you reported is now invalid. Also, if you do not apply for a replacement within three months, you may be fined up to £1,000.

If you want to remain in the UK after the expiration of your visa, apply for a visa extension, if granted, you’ll get a new BRP.
